About Tube to Tee

An independent guide to affordable golf around London you can reach by Tube or train. Where can I play this weekend, how much is it, and how do I get there?

Data & methodology

  • Coverage: 78 courses (47 with a published weekend visitor fee) across London, Essex and Hertfordshire.
  • Fees are standard weekend visitor green fees for 18 holes (unless stated), taken only from the club's or operator's own website and checked on 10 Oct 2026. We never estimate a fee. If no fee is published, we show “price on request”.
  • Journey times default to London Liverpool Street. If you set your own starting point, we estimate the time by taking the quickest of 20 London hubs: the time to reach the hub plus a Saturday-morning TfL Journey Planner time from that hub to the course (TfL open data, fetched October 2026). Tested against real planner times from 8 London postcodes, estimates are typically within 5–7 minutes, and 90% are within about 15 minutes. They are estimates, not live timetables, so check Citymapper or Google Maps before you travel.
  • Ratings are Google and Golfshake summary scores captured in Oct 2026.
  • Images are original generated illustrations. We use no club photos. Maps use OpenFreeMap / OpenStreetMap data.
  • Saved courses are stored only in your browser. There are no accounts.

How we rate courses (quality score)

Each course gets a 0–10 quality score for a typical club golfer, built only from public data:

  • Golfshake reviews (50%): average rating shrunk toward 3.8/5 as if it had 20 extra reviews, so a handful of reviews can't swing it, then doubled to a 10-point scale.
  • Google reviews (20%): shrunk toward 4.2/5 worth 100 reviews; full weight only from 50 reviews.
  • Challenge (20%): yardage from the back tees (6,300+ yds = 10; 6,000 = 8; 5,700 = 6; 5,400 = 4; shorter = 2).
  • Pedigree (10%): a national or county ranking listing = 10, a notable sourced designer = 7, otherwise a neutral 5.

Missing parts are dropped and the rest re-weighted; nothing is guessed. A course with no public reviews is shown as “Not rated yet”. Tiers come from the spread of scores: Premium 8.3+, Great 7.7–8.2, Solid 6.9–7.6, Basic below 6.9. Quality is kept separate from price: use the “Best value” sort for quality per pound. Each course page shows its breakdown with sources.
